What is Biochar?
While biochar has been used for centuries in many parts of the world, only recently has biochar’s potential as a highly sustainable way of improving soil conditions been realised. Typically made by pyrolysis, a process of heating biomass in the absence of oxygen, biochar can increase nutrient retention and water filtration in soil, making it an ideal addition to agricultural and horticultural processes.
Biochar is fixed carbon meaning it will not turn back into CO2, whilst using surplus coppice wood stops the wood from decaying and releasing methane and CO2.
Woodland Biochar
1.
Coppice waste wood is collected from the woodland biochar site.
2.
Kilns are fired up, ready for the smoke-free burn of the waste wood.
3.
Wood is added to the custom-made kilns, which burn up to 700 °C.
4.
Kilns are left running for around 13 hours per burn, whilst we add more wood.
5.
When finished, the kilns are shut down with water and the biochar is collected.
6.
Our pure biochar is then packaged in our eco-friendly sacks, ready for sale.
